MY RUNWAY - BOOHEMA BOOHENE (24/11/2013)
I was presented with a fantastic opportunity, and invited down by
the My Runway group to be part of the press. As it was the first event I have covered in terms of filming and photography, I was more than nervous. Perfection is a requirement at MCM and I wanted the quality of everything to be of a high standard. The place was filled with people, Fashion designers, models and different companies. It was a fulfilling feeling to be in an environment with many young entrepreneurs. Everyone was so friendly and willing to network which made the experience slightly more relaxing for me. People were dressed very professionally, wearing their best attire. The females in their high pencil heels and flowing dresses, and the males in their divine suits looking suave. This was definitely an event where you had to dress to impress.

The My Runway team were great and treated us very well, making sure all our needs were catered too. When I received my press pass, excitement began to take over me as I started to realise this was a big deal, therefore everything had to go to plan. We were allocated to the press box where we were able to set up our equipment and film. The show took off on a high with model’s serenading the stage and performing. What I loved about the show was that it was brought to life and engaged the audience at all times. It wasn't’ your average fashion show where people walk up and down the catwalk. They incorporated dance, singing, and spoken word which many people enjoyed. The lights and effects gave a cinematic atmosphere. Everything was that great that we wanted to film it all however it wasn't possible. All the models took it very seriously and you would have never thought that some of them had never done it before. The confidence and boldness in all of them was impressive.

The show gradually came to an end with Fuse ODG performing and
having the crowd excited. I enjoyed myself so much I honestly wanted the show to last forever. It was just great to see such a variety of designs and styles and see how outfits had been pieced together. Overall the show was definitely one of Coventry’s most successful events so far I enjoyed myself so much more than we expected. It was definitely a night to remember.

FRIDAY BORN - LOLADE HASSAN 19/11/2013

Who doesn't love a bit of African print?

Friday Born is an African inspired clothing line created by Emma Afua Amoafo. The 22 year old was influenced to create this clothing line during a visit to the Motherland. She was touched by a charity located in Ghana that supports orphan children, ‘Bless the children international’ which she wanted to raise money towards. She goes on by saying, “I really wanted to do something for them, and at the time I was thinking about ways to branch out and do something artistic alongside my degree”

This talented medical undergraduate started off with a small business selling accessories like bow ties and head bands via a Facebook page and the business has been growing ever since. The clothing line name was inspired by a Ghanaian tradition, to be named by the day of the week you were born. In this case, Afua means ‘Friday born’, hence the name of the brand.
Friday Born is known for its bright vibrant colours, patterns and shapes, bringing ordinary clothes to life! Amoafo uses modern day designs and whips them into an exotic African dessert. Her designs range from edgy playsuits, stylish crop tops, studded fitted dresses and of course, their signature bow ties.

The thing that stands out most about Friday born is their quirky and unique designs that cannot be found anywhere else. The “Ashanti Pirate” design, a leopard with a kente eyepatch turns so many heads as it is so unusual but at the same time stylish. She states that it is one of her favourite pieces, “I’ve sold the design on jumpers and t-shirts, and I’ve had some great feedback about it”
This young lady has not let her time consuming degree get in the way of her business. She admits that she had doubts about juggling both at the same time, “I study medicine, which is inherently really time-demanding and I worried that it might get too overwhelming at times”. But luckily her time management skills came in handy!

Amoafo is a great believer of giving back. Perhaps it’s her compassionate nature or just her deep love for the motherland. Her first donations to the orphanage changed their lives dramatically.
“This consisted of essential food and clean sanitation, and money that they used to develop an IT centre that they had begun to build. The IT centres purpose is for them to train some of the older children in IT skills, but also it acts as an internet cafe for the community, so they can get some revenue from it.”
“And now the goal for 2013 is to make enough money for the next project, which is installing a water tank. The water supply in their area is quite unreliable, so by installing a water tank they can be guaranteed water 24/7”
Keep watching out for Friday Born designs as it has so much more to offer in the near future in terms of media collaborations. Friday Born has a bright future ahead, catch them being featured on more online magazines and even music videos.
“I’ll be releasing the Autumn/Winter collection in the next few months, which I’m really excited about”

Here at MCM, we have high hopes for Friday Born and wish nothing but the best for this aspiring clothing line. African print fashion is heading places and taking Friday Born with it!!

                FEAR - NUNYA GEMEGAH (13/11/2013)
"Everyone's life is driven by something. Right now you may be driven by a problem, a pressure or a deadline. You may be driven by a painful memory, a fear or unconscious belief, what is the driving force in your life?"- Rick Warren.

Though this is extremely paraphrased in Rick Warren's "A purpose driven life" he addresses the need to assess what motivates us to do the things we do, highlighting the importance of self evaluation in order to live a life filled with purpose as well as a life for your self. It is odd how many of our emotions we allow to control our self development as apposed to allowing our emotions to show case our characters.
At some point in our day to day lives we are bound to encounter fear. We usually brush or laugh it off .Yet one thing people fail to realize is that in order to build our emotional maturity and overall level of experience and endurance, it is important to understand that weakness is not found in being afraid but on how much of an effect we allow fear to have on us.

As time has passed I've come to terms with, and in turn gained comfort from the fact that emotions never sustain their intensity. As blinding and overwhelming as they are as soon as they are triggered, they are inevitable to fade, but does that alter their relevance?
We live our lives either avoiding certain emotions such as confusion, fear, vulnerability and hurt or chasing the euphoric warmth associated with love and happiness.

Personally, fear is the emotion that dominates our lives, steering each decision we make, whether it is a positive choice, or one that stunts our growth. For example, we strive to succeed in fear of wasting our lives, going through our existence un-noticed and unappreciated. If religious; we fear our creator, facing punishment in the life that follows as a result of disobeying an omnipotent God like figure, even the idea of there being a creator at all. Even the way we tirelessly protect the ones we love in fear of losing them. One question worth asking is whether or not you can afford to live your life imprisoned by your fears or finding ways in which you can take practical steps towards overcoming them.
