THE ULTIMATE FREESTYLE REVIEW - CHRISTINA ASHAWE (19/01/2015)
When I first heard this song + watched the video the first thing I thought was, ‘Who are these guys?
And why are they so fresh??’ (Fresh as in cool of course!)
The Ultimate Freestyle is a breath of fresh air when it comes to sound of UK rap. Rarely do British
rappers throw it back to 90s hip hop and do it correctly. Instead they tend to go for the long-time
reigning sound of Trap music from the US or the Drill sound in Chicago. There’s nothing wrong with
being inspired by these sub-genres of Hip Hop, but it’s nice to see rappers from the UK do something
different for a change.
Their quirky and smooth flow give the classic instrumentals a whole new vibe; I found myself
involuntarily moving my head back and forth and laughing at some of their witty bars.
The music video continues on the good vibes from the song; a group of friends chilling and sipping
on some Baileys and Supermalt! The simple house party-esque video compliments the song well and
proves that not much is needed to make good quality and entertaining visuals.
I never knew who MOtiVe was until I came across this song and I’m glad I did as they have proven
that they have something completely different to offer to the UK rap scene. I’m interested and
excited to see what more they have to offer in 2015 and eagerly anticipate their next move!
